THDC was incorporated in  1988 as a joint venture Corporation of Govt. of India and Govt. of U.P. to execute Tehri Hydro Power Complex (2400 MW).  

It is entrusted with the responsibility of plan, promote and organise an integrated and efficient development of the hydro resources of Bhagirathi River and its tributaries at TEHRI and complementary downstream development (the TEHRI Complex) for power generation and other purpose.

Its present power generation capacity is 1000 MW and capacity of 1844 MW is under construction. The manpower strength of the corporation is 2422. It has an efficient team of 70 H.R. Executives.

THDC has been conferred with “HR Leadership Award” at Asia Pacific HRM Congress-2011 by acknowledging the Strategic and Iconic Leadership and contribution in the field of Human Resource Development. It has been conferred with Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award for outstanding performance in the field of implementation of official language in 2009-10.
