NPCIL is a PSU under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) of Government of India. It was incorporated in 1987 with the objective of operating nuclear power stations.

It has six operating power stations in different states of the country, totalling 4780 MW. It is constructing 3 more power stations to add up another 4800 MW. It has well trained manpower of about 12000 professionals including an efficient team of 80 HR executives.

It was conferred CHEMINOR award by Indian Institute of Materials Management in 2010. NPCIL is at number one position in the coveted list of nuclear excellence award recipients by World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). It was awarded First Prize at Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) in 2008 for the environment conservation activities.
