NEEPCO was incorporated on the 2 Apr, 1976 as a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise to exploit, utilize and develop the inherent power generation capability of the North East for the benefit of the Region and the country at large.
From a modest beginning, NEEPCO is today a Rs. 3500 crores company with an installed capacity of 1130 MW.
NEEPCO’s first power project the Khandong Power Station of the Kopili Hydro Electric Project (50 MW) in North Cachar Hills, Assam, was commissioned in 1984. Subsequently, another 100 MW was added to the Project in 1988 with the commissioning of the Kopili Power Station. Another 125 MW have been added with the commissioning of the Kopili Stage I Extension, and the Kopili Stage II Project.
NEEPCO has executed and is operating the Assam Gas Based Power Project (291 MW) in Assam, the Agartala Gas Turbine Project (84 MW) in Tripura, the Doyang Hydro Electric Project (75 MW) in Nagaland and the Ranganadi Hydro Electric Project (405 MW), in Arunachal Pradesh.
Having added 1130 MW of power in the Region, NEEPCO is presently working to complete its on-going Projects which include Tipaimukh H.E. Project, (1500 MW) in Manipur, the Kameng H.E.Project (600 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, the Tuirial H.E. Project (60 MW) in Mizoram, and the Tripura G.B.C.C.B. Project, (280 MW) in Tripura.
NEEPCO is determined to execute more power projects in the near future. Projects proposed to be taken up include the Lower Kopili H.E. Project (150 MW) Assam, the Ranganadi H.E. Project Stage II-(130 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, the Dikrong H.E. Project (100 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, Papumpam H.E. Project, (60 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, the Hirit H.E. Project (50 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, the Kameng Basin Projects (3945 MW), in Arunachal Pradesh and the Luhit Basin Project (7265 MW). With the final execution of all these Projects, NEEPCO will be adding a massive 11, 700 MW to its capacity.
The Corporation has made an amazing turnaround financially and has posted profit of Rs.125 crores in the first nine months of the current financial year, i.e. 2003-2004. The Corporation aims to make a profit of more than Rs.150 crores in the year 2003-2004 which would assure the continued growth of sales revenue, asset creation and capacity addition. Corporation has also successfully started exporting surplus power outside the N.E.Region.
NEEPCO has been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing PFR for 18 schemes with an aggregate capacity of 4915 MW out of the 50000 MW. Initiative launched by Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Hon’ble Prime Minister, last year. NEEPCO has already prepared and submitted the PFRs ahead of schedule. Advance action for preparation of DPRs for 3 hydro electric projects with an installed capacity of 2320 MW in Kameng Basin, Arunachal Pradesh, has been initiated. NEEPCO has also taken the initiative for preparation of DPRs for 4 hydroelectric projects with an installed capacity of 840 MW in Goriganaga sub basin of Sarda river basin in the state of Uttaranchal.
